Analyze Bursting Quality of Corrugated Boxes

Corrugated boxes are widely used for storing, handling and transporting products because they provide protection at a relatively low weight and cost. However, the performance of a corrugated box depends heavily on the quality of the paper and board used in its construction. If the material is weak, the box may tear, rupture or fail during handling and transportation.

One important quality parameter used to evaluate corrugated packaging is bursting strength. It indicates the ability of paper or paperboard to resist rupture when pressure is applied over a defined area.

Why Bursting Strength Matters in Corrugated Packaging
Corrugated boxes are exposed to different mechanical forces during filling, stacking, transportation and manual handling. A material with inadequate bursting strength may fail when subjected to localized pressure or impact.

How Does a Bursting Strength Tester Work?
A Bursting Strength Tester is used to measure the pressure required to rupture paper, paperboard or corrugated material.

During the test, the specimen is securely clamped between suitable holding fixtures. Pressure is then applied through a flexible diaphragm positioned below the sample. As the diaphragm expands, increasing pressure is transferred uniformly to the test specimen.

The pressure continues to increase until the specimen bursts. The maximum pressure recorded at the point of rupture is reported as the bursting strength of the material.

Secure clamping is essential because sample slippage can produce inaccurate test results.

Factors That Can Affect Bursting Strength
Several factors influence the bursting performance of corrugated board, including:

  • Paper grammage and fibre quality
  • Number and construction of board layers
  • Moisture content
  • Manufacturing consistency
  • Surface damage or creasing
  • Sample conditioning
  • Clamping pressure during testing

Because paper is sensitive to humidity, specimens should be properly conditioned before testing when accurate comparison between different samples is required.
