Tensile Strength measures the force or resistance to lengthwise stress which is used to pull something to the point where it breaks. It checks for the strength of a material when subjected to failure. The failure occurs according to the material type and design methodology. It is important to conduct material tests to select material for an application, quality control, and predict how a material will react to varying forces.

The three different types of tensile strength are:

  • Yield strength: the stress at which material strain changes from elastic deformation to plastic deformation, causing it to deform permanently.
  • Ultimate strength: the maximum stress a material can bear.
  • Breaking strength: the stress coordinate on the stress-strain curve at the point of rupture.

Tensile Strength is the toughness of products as the higher the tensile strength of a product, the more difficult it is to stretch. The tensile strength property can be used to check the durability of some materials such as rope and rubber bands to an extent but is regarded as unacceptable or negative in chewing gum, mozzarella cheese, noodles and so forth.

To perform the Tensile Pull Testing, a sample is held between the two grips a set distance apart. The loading arm moves up at a constant speed to deform the sample. The stress is applied to break the sample within the limit of the load cell, and the point at which the fracture will occur is noted down.

The data obtained from Tensile Strength Tester can be used to draw inferences in several industries:

Aerospace and Aviation Industry

  • The test helps in selecting lightweight materials so that the fuel consumption can be minimized, and the fulfillment of specific applications strength requirements can be achieved.
  • For testing the functionality of composite materials especially the combination of different materials that have superior strength compared to a single material

Automotive Industry

  • To evaluate the breaking strength of a seat belt. It is important for automotive safety along with car seats foam rubber
  • Examine the quality of fittings used outside the car, such as door and window seals, mirrors, mud flaps, and bumper moldings and trims
  • Check the quality of fittings used inside the car, such as airbags, dashboards, handles, mirrors, and handbrake levers
  • To develop and perform quality control on lightweight and high-strength materials important for safety and fuel economy

Pacorr offers Tensile Testing Machine which provides the best testing instrument to various industry verticals. The materials used for testing are plastic, rubber, polymers and so forth. These materials are tested under different stress conditions by adhering to international standards.
