Importance of Bursting Strength for Knitted Fabrics

Bursting Strength of Fabrics

Bursting strength is a prominent factor that can affect the elasticity and general strength of a fabric. The manufacturers need to understand that in order to provide the best quality products to the customers, they need to analyse the bursting strength of the fabrics they are using for their products. The bursting strength of knitted fabrics is the minimum amount of force that is required to break the fabric. Whenever a fabric is subjected to an extreme force or pressure from the vertical direction, it is called bursting. The force that is required to rupture the fabric in this scenario is called bursting strength. By testing the bursting strength, the manufacturers can also test the extension that the fabric has when it is subject to bursting pressure.

Testing the Bursting Strength

To test the bursting strength of the fabrics, there is an instrument used called bursting strength tester. The instrument is used for testing a small piece of specimen that is held under a serrated clamp. The force is applied on the specimen in vertical direction using a hydraulic mechanism. Heavy fluids such as glycerine are used for creating the required pressure on the specimen. The force is applied on the specimen until it burst and the magnitude of force applied is displayed on the digital screen of the instrument. This makes it easy and clear to get the test results with great accuracy.

One thing that needs to be kept in mind while performing the test is that the procedure should be followed according to the ASTM standards and also the testing instruments follows the ASTM prescription. This ensures accuracy of test results and helps in enhancing the quality of the fabrics so that manufacturers can provide nothing but the best products to their customers.
