INTRODUCTION TO MELT FLOW INDEX RATE
Melt flow index (MFI) or Melt Flow Rate (MFR) is the process of determining the flowability of the molten polymer in a particular time frame. MFI is defined as the granules taken in grams into the heating barrel then the temperature and pressure applied to molten the polymer within 10 minutes so that it can flow easily for various applicability like injection molding, blow molding, extrusion etc.
HOW TO MEASURE MELT FLOW INDEX
Melt flow index is the measurement ease of flow of thermoplastics. ISO standard 1133 measurement procedure is followed by Pacorr Melt flow Index tester which are as follows:
- A small amount of granules is taken into the heating barrel approximately 4 to 5 grams as a sample to test. The temperature is maintained as per the polymer chosen to test up to 400 degree celsius.
- To avoid air pockets while testing the sample is packed properly inside the barrel.
- After preheating standardized weight is kept on the piston.
- The piston applies pressure on the molten polymer which further leads to flow through the capillary die.
- After a time period of 10 minutes the flow is auto cut and weight is measured. The MFI expressed unit is gm/10 minutes.
