The packaging process comprises various steps including checks and inspections that are necessary to produce high quality products. One of the popular and high in demand testing processes is the Cobb Sizing Test. Therefore, to meet such requirements of testing, Pacorr testing Instruments has introduced several packaging testing instruments one of which is Cobb Sizing Tester. It plays an important role in paper and packaging industries to determine the liquid absorptivity of paper, corrugated sheets, fiberboards, and other sheets. It simply measures the absorption of water, oil or any other liquid by the paper in the given scenario.
Packaging manufacturers while manufacturing any packaging products need to keep a check on the safety of the products that are packed inside the box by providing strong & durable boxes. However, the quality and strength of a box can be in danger if the water absorption rate of the product is much faster than it is actually needed. This can not only damage or destroy the goods that are packed inside and also badly affect the purpose of the packaging of keeping the goods safe.
Which is why it is important to manufacture only strong cartons/corrugated boxes that can easily withstand external working conditions. Cobb sizing tester can help you test the water absorbency strength of the papers and corrugated sheets and help you understand whether the material can withstand external / practical conditions or not. These can be weather conditions that involve presence of moisture in the storage area, rain, and other transportation conditions.
Continuing the discussion, in this blog we will shed some light on the working of cobb sizing tester and how it will help you in the various quality control aspects.
Cobb Sizing test is performed to assess the amount of water a material can absorb. The cobb sizing value needs to be maintained to keep up the quality of the paper. The test includes measuring the maximum quantity of water a material can absorb in a particular period of time.
How to Perform Cobb sizing Test?
Cobb sizing tester comprises a steel cylinder with a round steel platform and cork at the bottom. To perform the test, the sample needs to be cut out in a circular shape from the material you want to test. Make sure that the size of the sample is bigger than the size of the platform.
- Now take the weight of the sample to the nearest 0.1 gram.
- Now place the cork sheet in the cylinder and then the sample above it. Cork sheet helps to avoid any spillage of the sample.
- Clamp the sample tightly. Now pour some water (100ml or 250ml) in the cylindrical fixture, as given in the standard for the application.
- Immediately start your stopwatch. If you want to test the paper, set the stopwatch for 120 seconds and 300 seconds for corrugated boxes. (If you observe any leakage, reject the sample and start the test with another sample)
- Now, drain out the water.
- Take out the sample from the cylindrical fixture.
- Now using the roller drain out the excess water.
- After draining, take the weight of the sample.
Formula for determining COBB value
Cobb Value = Sample weight after the test – Sample weight before the test
