In today's world, we live in a materialistic network of products. Whatever products we use or purchase in our daily life as well as in industries or commercial sectors are all composed of 90 to 80% metal. It can be iron or it can be an alloy, whatever the material is, metals are the need of the hour for any industrial production. This is because of the hardness, toughness and similar physical properties of the metal that they are sustainable enough to be used in products. Today metal is used in almost every industry be it automotive or a factory producing domestic goods. Hence, it is more important to ensure that the product is made out of a material that is high quality or the best grade and further can deliver the same quality in the end product. In this blog, we will see how Izod/Charpy Impact Tester can help a metal product engineer or a manufacturer ensure that the raw material selected for the production is tough enough to sustain any type of impact.
Need of evaluating the toughness or impact strength of metal
When a metal product that may be a pure metal or an alloy (that is a mixture of more than one metal) is used as a raw material to further make a component, a screw or a bigger machine, they must go through strict inspection to evaluate their strength and weaknesses. This process of quality testing is vital because any flaw or issue in the raw material can become huge and cost a lot to the manufacturer when it is detected in the end product. For instance, if a product engineer is using a metal alloy that is supposed to have a fixed ratio of the mixture, that is 70% iron and 30% bronze, then the mixture is supposed to have a fixed amount of resistance against an impact for a sudden load. This parameter is set by an industry where that raw material is to be delivered, hence it is important that the product is tested and ensured that the quality parameters which are expected from it are delivered to the customer. Therefore it must be tested for its toughness and impact strength. In lack of industry-required quality inspection, the metal or the raw material will go unchecked to the end consumer and the flaw which have been there in the initial production will remain till the end product is made. This can cost the manufacturer of the raw material, the product engineer who will work next in the line and the end product manufacturer along with the consumer a loss of energy time and interest. Eventually, the end consumer will lose interest in purchasing the product of that particular brand, pulling down the brand's reputation as a whole.
Testing the impact strength of metal through precision-based equipment
Izod/Charpy Impact strength tester is designed to deliver accurate testing results in the evaluation of toughness and impact strength of metals and even non-metals. It is also an efficient Plastic and Polymer testing instrument. The machine is designed as per international test standards which means that the test reports are acclaimed across the world. It has state-of-the-art features that help the user safely place the specimen and test the same for the toughness or the resistance it can deliver against an impact. The machine comes with a sample placement hook where the sample can be placed either vertically or horizontally depending upon the test type the user wants to perform. In case the user wants to perform the Izod test they need to keep the sample in a vertical position and if they want to test them for Charpy, they will be kept in a horizontal position. The hammer is pulled and tagged at a particular angle from where when it is left free it delivers the complete strength or energy into the sample and by repeatedly performing the test one can ensure the exact amount of angle and force at which the product will break and fail.
Thanks to Pacorr Testing instruments, we have all the required quality testing instruments that have helped us to ensure the best quality delivered to our clients.
