Why is an ASTM D 1238-Based Melt Flow Index Tester Important?

Polymer quality can vary from one batch to another even when the material is supplied under the same grade. Differences in molecular structure, processing history, additives, moisture or degradation can influence how the material behaves during extrusion or moulding. This is why reliable melt flow testing is an important part of incoming material inspection and production quality control.

A Melt Flow Index Tester is used to determine the flow behaviour of thermoplastic materials under specified temperature and load conditions. The test provides useful data such as Melt Flow Rate (MFR) and, depending on the method, Melt Volume Rate (MVR).

Role of Melt Flow Testing in Polymer Manufacturing
Before plastic granules are converted into bottles, containers, pipes, films or moulded components, manufacturers need to understand whether the material is suitable for the intended processing method.

Melt flow testing can help manufacturers:

  • Compare different batches of the same polymer grade
  • Detect variation in raw material quality
  • Monitor possible polymer degradation
  • Check supplier consistency
  • Select material suitable for extrusion or injection moulding
  • Maintain stable production parameters

For example, if several batches of a thermoplastic resin are received, comparing their melt flow values can help determine whether each batch falls within the approved processing specification. A significant difference in MFR may indicate a change in viscosity or molecular characteristics that could influence mould filling, extrusion stability or finished-product performance.

MFI should not, however, be used as the only parameter for material selection. Mechanical properties, density, moisture, additives and end-use requirements should also be considered.

Why ASTM D1238 and ISO 1133 Matter
Melt flow test results are meaningful only when the test conditions are controlled and repeatable.

Widely used test methods include ASTM D1238 and ISO 1133. These methods define important test parameters such as specimen preparation, test temperature, applied load, conditioning and result calculation.

Factors that can influence test results include:

  • Incorrect barrel temperature
  • Wrong test load
  • Improper preheating time
  • Moisture in the polymer
  • Contamination inside the barrel or die
  • Inconsistent sample preparation
