Corrugated boxes are widely used for transporting and storing products because they provide protection while remaining relatively lightweight and economical. However, a carton that performs well during normal handling may still collapse when subjected to stacking loads in a warehouse or during transportation.

This is why manufacturers evaluate carton compression strength using a Box Compression Tester. The test provides measurable information about how much compressive force a box can withstand before reaching a defined failure or deformation condition.

What is Box Compression Testing?
Box compression testing is a laboratory method used to determine the resistance of an assembled corrugated box or package to vertical compressive forces. It helps simulate the type of load cartons may experience when multiple boxes are stacked during storage, palletization and distribution.

The measured compression strength can help packaging engineers compare different box designs, board grades, flute structures and manufacturing configurations.

It is important to remember that laboratory compression strength does not alone determine actual stacking life. Humidity, storage duration, pallet pattern, load distribution and handling conditions can also influence carton performance.

Box Compression Testing Procedure
During the test, the box specimen is positioned between the compression platens of a Box Compression Tester. The specimen should be properly aligned so that the applied load is distributed as uniformly as possible.

The moving platen then applies a controlled vertical compression force to the box. As compression increases, the load measurement system continuously records the force acting on the specimen.

Depending on the selected test procedure, the test may continue until:

  • Maximum compression force is reached
  • The carton collapses or structurally fails
  • A specified deformation is achieved
  • A predetermined load condition is completed

The resulting peak compression force provides useful data about the carton’s structural resistance.

For reliable comparisons, specimens should also be prepared and conditioned consistently because moisture and atmospheric humidity can significantly affect corrugated board strength.

Compression testing helps manufacturers understand whether a carton has sufficient strength for its intended packaging and distribution conditions.

Several factors can influence the final test result, including corrugated board quality, box dimensions, flute type, moisture content, creasing, printing, ventilation holes and manufacturing defects.

Relative humidity is particularly important because corrugated paperboard can absorb moisture from the surrounding environment. Increased moisture content can reduce board stiffness and lower compression resistance.

Testing conditions should therefore remain controlled when results from different samples or production batches are being compared.
