A painted or plated surface may look perfect when it leaves the production line, but early rust can still appear when the product is exposed to moisture or a corrosive environment. A salt spray chamber helps manufacturers evaluate coating consistency and identify weaknesses such as pores, scratches, poor adhesion and incomplete surface treatment.
Start with the Required Test Standard
Before selecting a chamber, confirm the testing standard mentioned in your customer specification or quality plan. ASTM B117 and ISO 9227 are commonly used for salt-fog testing. Depending on the application, the required method may be Neutral Salt Spray (NSS), Acetic Acid Salt Spray (AASS) or Copper-Accelerated Acetic Acid Salt Spray (CASS).
Not every chamber supports all these methods, so this must be verified before purchase.
Check the Chamber’s Control and Repeatability
Reliable testing depends on maintaining consistent conditions throughout the exposure period. A suitable chamber should provide:
- Accurate chamber temperature control
- Stable atomizing air pressure
- Uniform fog distribution
- Proper fog collection arrangements
- Continuous operation for long-duration tests
Ask the manufacturer how parameters such as solution pH, salt concentration and fog collection rate are monitored. Safety features such as low-water indication, over-temperature protection and automatic cut-off can also reduce operational risk.
Select the Correct Testing Capacity
Choose the internal capacity according to the dimensions and number of specimens tested in each batch. Samples should be positioned without touching one another, and condensed droplets from one specimen should not fall onto another.
The chamber should also include suitable specimen holders for painted panels, plated components, fasteners or other test parts.
Examine Construction Quality
The chamber is continuously exposed to a highly corrosive atmosphere. Therefore, its internal structure, lid, seals, pipelines and sample holders must be made from corrosion-resistant materials. FRP, polypropylene and PVC are commonly used because they offer good resistance to salt-fog conditions.
Consider Maintenance and Technical Support
Nozzles, reservoirs, fog collectors and air-saturation systems require regular inspection. Select a design that allows easy cleaning, drainage and maintenance. Availability of calibration, spare parts, installation support and operator training should also be considered not only the initial price.
A salt spray test is useful for checking coating quality and process consistency, but it should not be treated as an exact prediction of real-world product life. ISO 9227 also explains that salt spray testing is not intended to predict long-term corrosion resistance.
