How to Calculate the MFI of Pharmaceutical Plastic Bottles?

The Pharmaceutical industry invests a lot in their packaging as this is the only section of their market that is not only is expected to deliver resistance towards physical but also chemical strength. They are also expected to deliver important information to the retailers and the users. Above that, they also are responsible for the brand reputation. That is why it is very important that they don't fail and disintegrates at high temperature. To inspect the same, a very efficient test instrument is required which is the Melt Flow Index Tester. In this blog, we will learn more about how to calculate the MFI of pharma bottles or packaging.

How the melting point affects the plastic bottles in pharmaceuticals?

The pharma plastic bottles that are manufactured for medicinal packaging must deliver high resistance towards heat, temperature and dropping temperature as well. They must not allow the extreme modification in the outside weather to affect its composition and integration. Therefore, it is important that they are designed as per the requirements of the particular medical industry. The melting nature of the product can tell a lot about the product and help the engineer to set its nature as per the standards. If the packaging is made of low-grade plastic it can melt down at a low temperature exposing the product packed inside and further changing its chemical composition which can be a life risk for patients if taken.

Melt Flow Index Tester, a highly trusted polymer testing instrument is particularly designed as per the international MFI testing standards to deliver highly precise test results in calculating the melt flow nature of the sample tested. The machine can help evaluate the MFI, or MVR value of the product. The tester comes with a range of weights that are pushed inside the testing barrel to move the polymer granules for further heating. When they are heated enough that they melt down, the temperature is noted on the digital display screen which is based on a microprocessor software bringing accuracy in recording testing data. The melted extrusion when comes out of the barrel, and after 10 mins of flow, the molten stream is cut down and weighed. The measured weight is the MFI value.

This calculated value will help the product engineer to choose the best match of polymer material to produce the desired type of plastic bottles or packaging for medicines.
