What Is The Coefficient of Friction And How Is It Determined?

When the facade of two materials slides with each other, it is known as the coefficient of friction or COF. The amount or proportion of force required to slide the facade of one material on the other material is the coefficient of friction tester. The lower the coefficient of friction value the slicker the surface of the material is. This implies that the plastic material is resistive to sliding friction.

The coefficient of friction test can be performed on paperboard, plastic film or paper. This can be performed using a popular testing machine i.e. coefficient of friction testing instrument. It helps in evaluating the angle at which the facade of one material slides or slips across the surface of another substrate having the same or different material.

How does the Coefficient of Friction Tester work?

The Coefficient of Friction Testing instrument is used to determine the friction quality of one plastic film that slides over the surface of another material or plastic film which is applied on another material. The friction value that we get from this test automatically gets recorded on the digital display that works on a micro-processor based program. This testing equipment is designed keeping in mind various national and international test standards i.e. ASTM D 618, BS 2782, ASTM D 883, and ASTM D 1894 that ensures precise and accurate test results.

Now continuing the discussion, let’s know more about the testing instrument. We will now discuss the features & technical specifications of this testing device..

Features of Coefficient of Friction Testing Instrument

The Coefficient of Friction COF tester is widely used in plastic film manufacturing industries. The requirement arises to control the amount of friction on the plastic films. This is because if there is a lack of friction on the plastic films, it will let the packets slide from one place to another during travel or storage. This can lead to damaging the quality of the products that are packed inside or may result in packaging failure also that can lead to unhappy customers.

Bursting of the packaging film, leaking of the product or spillage of the substance are a few examples that are examples of the plastic film failures.

Different Types of Coefficient of Friction

There are two types of Coefficient of friction i.e. Kinetic and Static Friction. The plastic film’s static friction prevents the material from moving and its kinetic friction on the other hand prevents the material from slipping away. Using Pacorr’s Coefficient of Friction tester, it is easy to test both Static and Kinetic Friction properties of the materials.

Significance of Coefficient of Friction Tester in Plastic Industry

In the plastic film industries, it is important for manufacturers to determine the stacking strength of the packaging films. Therefore, testing the friction of these plastic films is of utmost importance. The test prevents the accidents that may occur during transportation or shipping due to the slipping of the plastic films.

To ease the testing process of coefficient of friction for plastic films, Pacorr Testing Instruments have introduced a coefficient of friction tester. If you too are looking to buy one, contact Pacorr.
