Significance of Drop Testing In Packaging Manufacturing Industries

In a packaging products manufacturing industry, different types of tests are performed on material including vibration test, compression test, drop test, water-resistance test, burst strength, edge crush test (ECT) and others to help you decide what type of packing and corrugated materials are best suited for your application. To ensure that your customers receive an accurate product from your end, it is essential that corrugated and cardboard box manufacturers perform testing on their materials beforehand. To ensure your boxes will provide the results that you are looking for, it is essential that you do longevity tests on your corrugated boxes.

Using the correct laboratory testing instruments for box durability tests is essential so customers do not run into problems. With this, you can perform various tests on the packing boxes in order to gauge the quality of your packing. One of the important tests is the Drop Strength test.

Drop tests are performed by nearly all box manufacturers to test a box's strength during pre-shipment checks. The measurements are important as the Test will tell you how much force can withstand and how much weight can hold up in a drop when the box is being moved, something that is most likely going to occur due to carriers and their rough handling of packages.

The drop tester is designed to measure how much force your cartons may take when being tossed around, and also the amount of weight your boxes can hold. Often called the drop impact test, drop strength is an industry standard that helps to recognize how much force is required to break a corrugated box or a flexible packaging. Drop testing machine generally offer better protection from damage caused by outside forces such as drops, kicks, or punctures, compared with boxes of the equivalent ECT rating.

Apart from the drop test, let’s know about a few common test methods that are performed on corrugated boxes. Let’s dig in.

Bursting Strength Test of Corrugated Boxes - In this test procedure, a rubber diaphragm is used to press against the walls of a corrugated carton until it breaks. Pressure is applied to the bottom side of the test article with the help of a rubber diaphragm that is expanded with hydraulic pressure.

Compression Strength Test - The compression force for corrugated boxes can also be calculated using McKees formula. For this, the values for edge crush tests (ECT), caliper or corrugated thickness tests (CBT), and the perimeter (P) of a box are taken into consideration.

Cobb Sizing Tester - For some applications, cobb sizing tester is used for testing water-resistance of corrugated cartons.
