Bursting Strength of paper is a composite strength property influenced by many properties of the sheet, mainly tensile strength and stretch. It depends on proportion, type, and amount of fibers present in the sheet, degree of beating and refining, way to prepare, sheet formulation and additives usage. It can be measured by using Mullen tester. The sample is held between annular clamps that are subjected to increasing pressure by a rubber diaphragm, which is maximised by hydraulic pressure at a controlled rate, until the sample bursts. The pressure reading at the moment of the burst is recorded as the bursting strength. The units of expression are pounds per square inch. The measurement is termed as the "pop test", "Mullen" or simply the "burst". The burst test for paperboard varies from that of lighter papers in that a heavier Mullen tester is used with a larger diaphragm opening.
