Evaluate Corrosion of Coating with Salt Spray Testing Method

Testing a corrosion resistant coating is usually challenging. There are many companies who use data to draw their punches. Let’s understand how to evaluate the best coating for your application. Just as everything degrade or corrode over time under the right conditions. Evaluating a coating for corrosion resistance is more on how to evaluate the surface to yield beneficial data rather than revealing a surface to conditions so extreme that only less materials can exist. So test for a surface for salt spray exposure at set temperatures, it does worthless to design a test that reveals the surface to 150 C hydrochloric acid. Either the coating fails too quickly to give useful data. The data won't be effective as HCl is not salt water, or you'll get a material or coating that exists the test but costs too much to be practically used in the application.

Various industries use distinctive tests. For instance in the oil and gas industry, sulfuric acid exposure data is utilised, and in semiconductors HBr is utilised. The Corrosion test is the mainly used and performed as quality control test in the quality assurance lab of metal industry. This test is conducted in a Salt Spray Chamber. The Test is performed on ferrous alloys and metals. It is also conducted in the paint and coating industry to test the quality of coating which deliver long time performance for ferrous metals.
A Salt Spray Corrosion Chamber replicates the salt-laden situation inside in an accelerated manner. Test starts with preparing the sample. The sample can be a fastener or thin metal plates that is coated or plated with paint. In case of fastener being a sample material or any other material that is not flat in shape such as bolts, are suspended by tying them with a thread and then on a thin rod. This rod used to tie the nuts and bolts are suspended and kept inside the chamber by hanging it. If the sample is flat such as metal sheets or plates, then they affixed on the sample carrier area of the chamber at a particular angle.
