Peel strength is a force required to separate two adhesive or bonded materials from each other. This property is measured on various products in different industries such as adhesives, automotive, aerospace, packaging, biomaterials, and more. The results that we get from the peel test are used to determine the quality of the adhesives that are joined together. Such results also provide information on the effects of the environment on the adherence strength of the adhesives.
Now, the question is…
How To Measure Peel Strength?
Well…Peel tests involve the testing procedures that are performed at a constant-speed in the tensile direction.
In adhesive material testing, peel strength is calculated after evaluating the average load required to peel the specimen divided by width of the specimen peeled. Furthermore, the load data used in calculating the peel strength is derived from the position curve vs flat portion of the load.
Types of Peel Tests
A universal testing machine which is used to perform the peel tests is known as Peel Strength Tester. The testing instrument comprises various feel fixtures that are used to perform different types of peel tests. You can just change the fixtures and perform various peel tests. The major difference found between these testing methods is the angle of the peel. There are two common types of peel tests are:
- 45 degree peel test - Widely performed in food packaging industries
- 90 degree peel test - It is performed with the 90-degree peel fixtures. It is used in food industries, packaging industries and adhesive industries.
- 180 degree peel test - 180-degree peel test method in which the peeling arms are clamped in the tensile position and pulled apart to test the peeling strength of an adhesive when pulled in tensile direction.
Standard Adheres to Peel Test Methods
Common peel testing standards that are used to performed the peel test are:
- ASTM D903 – The standard defines the testing method to determine the Peel Strength of Adhesive Bonds
- ASTM D1876 – Another popular standard to measure Peel Resistance of Adhesives i.e. T-Peel Test
- ASTM D3330 – Standard testing method that helps to measure Peel Adhesion of different types of Pressure-Sensitive tapes.
and more.
