Scuffing is a phenomenon that can easily deface the printed labels during transportation and can cause the information to deteriorate. The scuffing happens when two same surfaces rub against each other which is a common thing between packaging during storage or transportation. If the printed labels do not have much resistance against scuffing it can cause them cause them to easily be defaced.

To prevent this, the manufacturers use scuff resistance tester that helps them in ensuring that the printed labels are efficient enough to resist any damage to their surface because of scuffing, The instrument simulates the actual scuffing conditions that the printed labels have to face during their usage. The instrument is set for a certain number of rotations with the specimen placed in between the cylinders that will cause them to rub against each other. Once the test is done, the specimen are studied for the extent of damage that scuffing has done to them.  This way, the manufacturers can determine the resistance that the labels can offer when they are subjected to scuffing and ensure appropriate transportation arrangement to prevent any damage from scuffing.
