Flammability Tester

The Pacorr Flammability Tester is designed to evaluate the burning behaviour and flame resistance of plastics and other combustible materials under controlled laboratory conditions. The instrument applies a standard flame to a vertically positioned test specimen and allows the operator to measure flame application time, after-flame duration, afterglow time and burning behaviour. Its stainless-steel test chamber, adjustable specimen holder, controlled burner angle and precise flame-height arrangement help laboratories perform repeatable flammability tests. The equipment is suitable for quality-control laboratories, plastic manufacturers, automotive component suppliers, packaging companies and research facilities.

What is a Flammability Tester?

A Flammability Tester is a laboratory instrument used to determine how a material reacts when exposed to a controlled ignition source. It helps assess whether the specimen ignites, continues burning after removal of the flame, produces an afterglow or extinguishes within a specified period. The Pacorr PC-FT performs a vertical burning test by holding the specimen in an upright position and applying a controlled flame through an adjustable Bunsen burner. The operator can observe and record important parameters such as flame propagation, after-flame time, afterglow time and the overall burning response of the material. These results help manufacturers compare different materials, verify production consistency and evaluate products according to applicable flammability test requirements, including relevant UL 94 vertical burning procedures.

Working Principle
The test specimen is securely fixed in the stainless-steel specimen holder inside the enclosed chamber. A Bunsen burner is adjusted to produce a standard flame height of 20 ± 1 mm and positioned at an angle of 20° from the vertical axis. The flame is applied to the lower end of the specimen for a predefined time. After the burner is removed, the operator records the duration of flaming, afterglow and any visible flame propagation. The observations are used to evaluate the burning characteristics and fire performance of the tested material.

Benefits of Using the Flammability Tester
The Pacorr Flammability Tester helps manufacturers understand how quickly a material ignites and whether it continues burning after the ignition source is removed. This information is important when selecting raw materials for electrical, automotive, packaging and consumer-product applications. Controlled burner positioning, standard flame height and accurate flame application timing improve the consistency of test conditions. The enclosed chamber also reduces the influence of surrounding air movement on the flame. Regular flammability testing supports material comparison, product development, supplier evaluation and batch-to-batch quality control. It can also help identify changes in burning behaviour caused by material composition, additives, thickness or manufacturing conditions.

Applicable Test Standard
The instrument is suitable for conducting vertical burning tests according to applicable UL 94 procedures and other relevant flammability testing requirements. Test conditions, specimen preparation, conditioning and result classification should be selected according to the material and applicable standard.

Why Choose Pacorr Flammability Tester?
Pacorr manufactures laboratory testing instruments for evaluating the quality, safety and performance of industrial materials. The PC-FT Flammability Tester combines a corrosion-resistant test chamber, controlled flame arrangement, adjustable specimen holding and accurate application timing in one practical laboratory system.

The equipment is suitable for manufacturers that require reliable flammability testing for incoming materials, production samples, finished components and product-development work.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. What does a Flammability Tester measure?

It measures burning behaviour such as ignition response, flame propagation, after-flame time, afterglow time and the ability of a material to self-extinguish.

Q2. Which materials can be tested?
The tester can evaluate suitable specimens made from plastics, polymers, rubber, foam, packaging materials and other combustible products.

Q3. Why is the specimen tested vertically?
Vertical testing evaluates how the flame travels when the specimen is positioned upright. It is commonly used for materials intended for electrical, automotive and industrial applications.

Q4. What is after-flame time?
After-flame time is the duration for which a specimen continues to burn after the ignition flame has been removed.

Q5. Does the instrument support UL 94 testing?
The tester is designed for applicable UL 94 vertical burning procedures. The exact test method and classification depend on specimen dimensions, conditioning and the selected UL 94 test category.
