A Rolling Ball Tack Tester is used to evaluate the initial adhesive response of pressure-sensitive materials, including self-adhesive tapes, labels, protective films, medical tapes and coated laminates. It helps manufacturers determine how quickly an adhesive surface develops contact when subjected to light and momentary pressure.

During the test, a specified stainless steel ball is released from a controlled position on an inclined track. The ball rolls onto the adhesive specimen placed with its coated surface facing upward. Its movement is gradually resisted by the adhesive until it stops. The distance travelled over the specimen is then measured and used for comparative evaluation. A shorter stopping distance generally indicates higher initial tack, while a longer distance indicates lower tack. Designed in accordance with ASTM D3121 requirements, the instrument offers a practical method for routine quality control, batch comparison and adhesive-product development. Its controlled testing arrangement supports repeatable evaluation of pressure-sensitive adhesive materials
