Izod/Charpy Impact Tester - Applications and Benefits

What is an Izod / Charpy Impact Tester?

The Izod and Charpy impact testers are both used to measure the impact resistance of materials, specifically metals and plastics.

The Izod impact test involves striking a notched specimen with a pendulum. The energy required to break the specimen is measured and reported in units of joules per meter. The test measures the energy absorbed by the specimen during fracture.

The Charpy test involves striking a notched specimen with a pendulum, but the specimen is held vertically instead of horizontally. The energy required to break the specimen is also measured and reported in units of joules per meter. The test measures the energy absorbed by the specimen during fracture.

Both tests are widely used in the manufacturing and engineering industries to ensure the quality and reliability of materials used in various applications.

Applications of Izod and charpy impact tester

The Izod and Charpy impact testers are commonly used in the following industries and applications:

  • Aerospace: The aerospace industry uses these tests to measure the impact resistance of various materials used in aircraft components, such as wings and fuselages.
  • Automotive: The automotive industry uses these tests to evaluate the impact resistance of materials used in the manufacture of car parts, such as bumpers and body panels.
  • Construction: The construction industry uses these tests to measure the impact resistance of building materials, such as concrete and steel.
  • Manufacturing: Manufacturers use these tests to ensure the quality and reliability of materials used in the production of consumer products, such as appliances and electronics.
  • Military and defense: The military and defense industries use these tests to evaluate the impact resistance of materials used in the construction of vehicles, armor, and other equipment.
  • Research and development: Researchers and engineers use these tests to develop and test new materials for various applications, such as sports equipment, medical devices, and industrial machinery.

Standard Operating Procedure to Perform the Test Using Izod/Charpy Tester
The general steps to perform the Izod or Charpy impact test are as follows:

  • Sample preparation: Cut a standardized specimen of the material to be tested, according to the relevant standard. The specimen should have a notch to create a stress concentration point where the fracture will occur during the test.
  • Set up the test: Secure the specimen in the fixture of the impact tester, making sure it is properly aligned and perpendicular to the impact direction. Adjust the pendulum height and angle according to the standard requirements.
  • Calibrate the machine: Make sure the impact tester is calibrated properly and the pendulum has the correct energy level for the test.
  • Perform the test: Raise the pendulum to the appropriate height, release it, and allow it to strike the specimen. The impact will cause the specimen to fracture, and the pendulum will continue to swing upward.
  • Measure the results: Measure the energy absorbed by the specimen during fracture, which is typically recorded in joules per meter. Repeat the test several times to obtain an average value.
  • Analyze the results: Compare the results obtained from the test with the relevant standard requirements or the material's specifications. Evaluate the material's toughness and determine if it meets the necessary standards for its intended application.
  • Record the results: Record the test results in a report, including information about the specimen, the test conditions, and the results obtained.
