Want to Test the Compressive Strength of Packaging Boxes?

Testing the compression strength of packaging can be a helpful tool in ensuring that the product arrives in good condition. Packaging materials can be tested using a variety of methods, including stress testing, burst testing, and impact testing.

Stress testing is the most common way to test the compression strength of packaging. This method uses a weight to apply pressure to the packaging and measure the amount of force needed to break the packaging.

Burst testing is a variation of stress testing that uses a burst pressure to measure the compression strength of the packaging. This method is used to determine how long the packaging can withstand a high burst pressure before breaking.

Not only the stress testing and burst testing, there are multiple tests that are performed on packaging boxes such as compression test, impact resistance test, water-resistance test and many more. Continuing the discussion, let’s discuss one major test method that is widely used in packaging industries i.e. compression or crushing test.

What is a Compression / Crushing Test?

Box Compression/ Crushing Test can be done using edge crush tester, flat crush tester, ring crush tester, or box compression tester. As suggested by its name, the edge crush testers are devices that are used to measure the resistance of an edge to crushing. The edge crush test is a laboratory test procedure that is used to examine the cross-direction crushing of a corrugated box or a fiberboard sample.

The tester uses a metal plate that is placed on the edge of the object to be tested and then a weight is applied to the plate to crush the edge. The crush resistance of the edge can then be calculated using the following formula.

The edge crush resistance i.e. R, is measured in KN/m (kilonewtons per meter)
It is calculated as
R = 0.01 x Fmax
where,

Fmax explains the average value of the maximum force and it is calculated in Newton.

Specifications of Edge Crush Tester

The specifications of an edge crush tester depend on the specific application in which it will be used. However, most edge crush testers fall into one of two categories: static and dynamic.

Static edge crush testers are used to measure the force required to crush an edge. They typically have a set force applied to the edge and measure the amount of deformation that occurs. Static edge crush testers are often used to test the crush strength of materials.

Dynamic edge crush testers are used to measure the force required to crush an edge in response to an applied load. They can be used to test the crush strength of materials in response to impact, vibration, compression, etc.

When it comes to testing edge crush resistance, a crusher tester is a must-have tool. The benefits of using an edge crush tester include:

Accurate measurement of edge crush resistance

  • Reduced testing time
  • Increased safety
  • Improved production efficiency
  • Reduced noise and vibration
  • Reduced wear and tear on equipment
