What Does a Drop Tester Evaluate?
The test examines the protective performance of the assembled package. A carton may remain closed while the product inside suffers damage, so assessment should cover both the packaging and its contents. Typical observations include carton crushing, opened seams, displaced cushioning, product movement and visible breakage. Where required by the agreed acceptance criteria, inspect the product’s function after testing as well as its appearance. Results help compare packaging designs under the same conditions. For example, two cushioning arrangements can be evaluated using the same product, package weight, drop sequence and inspection criteria. Changing several variables together makes it harder to identify why performance improved or deteriorated.
Working Principle and Test Procedure
The package is positioned above an impact surface and released from the selected height. Its response is then assessed against the test plan. Package mass and height influence the energy involved, while cushioning, product fragility and impact orientation influence the resulting damage. A stronger outer carton may not solve a problem caused by insufficient internal restraint. Similarly, an undamaged exterior does not confirm that a fragile component remains functional.
