What is a Tearing Strength Tester?

A Tearing Strength Tester measures the resistance offered by a material when an existing tear is forced to propagate through a specified distance. The result helps manufacturers understand how easily paper, film, fabric or packaging material may tear during handling and use. In the Elmendorf method, a small initial slit is made in the specimen. A pendulum then tears the remaining test length, and the energy lost by the pendulum is used to determine the tearing strength. The instrument supports objective comparison between raw materials, production batches and finished products.

Working Principle
The test specimen is held between a fixed clamp and a moving pendulum clamp. A cutting blade creates an initial slit in the specimen. When the pendulum is released, it moves through an arc and tears the remaining section of the sample. The energy consumed during tear propagation is indicated on the instrument scale. Higher resistance requires more energy and produces a higher tearing-strength value. For accurate comparison, specimens should be prepared with consistent dimensions, thickness, conditioning and test direction.

  • Coated paper and laminated materials
  • Aluminium foil laminates
  • Labels and wrapping materials
  • Textile and packaging samples

Benefits of Tear Strength Testing
Tearing-strength testing helps manufacturers select materials that can withstand handling, conversion, filling and transportation. It identifies variations caused by raw-material quality, thickness, fibre direction, polymer orientation or production conditions. The test also supports supplier comparison, product development and rejection analysis. Testing specimens in machine direction and cross direction helps identify directional differences in paper, plastic films and textile materials.

Test Procedure

  1. Condition and prepare the specimen according to the applicable test method.
  2. Select the suitable pendulum capacity for the material.
  3. Place the specimen evenly between the two clamps.
  4. Tighten the clamps without wrinkling or slipping the sample.
  5. Use the cutting blade to create the initial slit.
  6. Release the pendulum to tear the remaining specimen length.
  7. Record the tearing-strength reading.
  8. Test the required number of specimens and report the average result.

Samples should be tested separately in machine direction and cross direction where applicable.

Applicable Test Standards
Depending on the material and instrument configuration, tearing-strength testing may be performed according to:

  • ASTM D1922 for plastic film and thin sheeting
  • ASTM D1424 for textile fabrics
  • ASTM D689 for paper
  • TAPPI T 414 for internal tearing resistance of paper

The applicable standard should be selected according to the specimen material and customer testing requirement.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. What does a Tearing Strength Tester measure?

It measures the force or energy required to continue an existing tear through a specified length of material.

Q2. Which materials can be tested?
The instrument can test paper, plastic films, textiles, flexible packaging and other thin sheet materials.

Q3. What is the difference between tear initiation and tear propagation?
Tear initiation is the force required to start a tear. Elmendorf testing measures the resistance required to continue a tear after an initial slit has been created.

Q4. Why are different pendulum capacities required?
Low-strength and high-strength materials require different pendulum capacities to obtain readings within a suitable testing range.

Q5. Should machine and cross directions be tested separately?
Yes. Paper, plastic film and fabric may provide different tearing-strength results in different manufacturing directions.

Q6. How is the correct pendulum selected?
The pendulum should produce a reading within the recommended scale range. A higher or lower capacity may be selected depending on the sample resistance.

Q7. What is the price of a Tearing Strength Tester?
The price depends on pendulum capacity, accessories, calibration and selected configuration. Contact Pacorr for an accurate quotation.

A Tearing Strength Tester, specifically the Elmendorf model offered by Pacorr, is a precision instrument used to determine the tearing strength of various materials such as textiles, paper, plastics, and cardboard. It operates based on a free-falling pendulum mechanism to apply a sudden force to the material, measuring the resistance to tearing.
Tearing strength is crucial for assessing the durability and performance of materials under stress or strain. It indicates how well a material can withstand external forces without failing, which is essential for ensuring the quality and longevity of the final product. High tearing strength is particularly important in industries such as textiles, packaging, aerospace, and automotive, where materials are often subjected to harsh conditions.
The Tearing Strength Tester works by clamping a sample of the material to be tested into the device. A pendulum is then loaded with a defined weight, pulled to a certain height, and released, allowing it to fall freely and tear through the sample. The energy lost by the pendulum, which correlates with the force required to tear the material, is measured to determine the material's tearing strength.
Yes, the Tearing Strength Tester by Pacorr is designed for a wide range of materials, including textiles, plastics, paper, and cardboard. It is versatile enough to accommodate different thicknesses and strengths by adjusting the pendulum weights, making it suitable for various industry applications.
Pacorr's Tearing Strength Tester is designed to provide highly accurate and repeatable test results. It achieves accuracy and repeatability of up to +/- 2% within its entire testing range. This precision is ensured through features like inbuilt calibration weights and a robust, corrosion-resistant structure for consistent performance.
