ASTM D638
The ASTM D638 standard is a critical testing method used to determine the tensile properties of plastics. Tensile testing is essential for understanding how a plastic material responds to forces that attempt to stretch it. This test helps manufacturers assess the strength, flexibility, and overall durability of plastic materials in various applications. The test procedure involves preparing a specimen in the shape of a "dog-bone" or dumbbell and placing it in a tensile testing machine, such as the one manufactured by Pacorr. Once the specimen is clamped into the machine, a uniaxial pulling force is applied at a constant rate until the specimen breaks. During this process, key data points are captured, including tensile strength, elongation at break, yield strength, and the modulus of elasticity. Tensile strength refers to the maximum force a material can withstand before failure, while elongation measures how much it can stretch before breaking. The modulus of elasticity, on the other hand, measures the material's stiffness and its resistance to being deformed.
