Enhance the Impact Resistance of Industrial Materials with Proper Testing

Nowadays, research on the impact properties of composites is vastly growing to determine the strength properties of composites for industrial application purposes. The Charpy and Izod tests are two methods for studying the toughness of materials. Many industries use either of the two for testing material strength. The tests measure the amount of energy absorbed by a notched sample when it gets hit by a weighted pendulum. The computed energy serves as a measure of the specimen’s toughness. Usually, there are four types of impact velocity which are low velocity, high velocity, ballistic and hypervelocity. The Charpy and Izod impact tests were classified in low-velocity impact, which measures the impact strength and toughness of a material. An impact blow is hit to a test sample utilizing a pendulum-type hammer and the impact value is determined from the energy required to break the specimen.

On an industrial scale, Charpy impact can be described as an economical quality control method to determine the impact toughness and notch sensitivity of materials. Besides having a very low cost, the simple procedure in preparing samples and obtaining results quickly has made this testing a favorable standard in various industries. There are many applications of the Charpy impact test in many industries such as the pipeline, the construction of pressure vessels and bridges. These industries are under pressure to develop tough, strong, and ductile materials. In the research and development stage, various studies had been conducted on the Charpy impact test. Different types of material with various factors affecting the impact properties, such as the application of a chemical treatment, percentage of fiber loading and the fiber length, had been analyzed.

Izod Impact Tester is used in many industries for various purposes. It is used in the medical, automotive, and plastic industries. The Izod test evaluates the relative toughness and impact toughness of the materials and is often used in quality control applications where it is a fast and economical test.

Why do we measure Impact resistance?

The impact is referred to as is a huge amount of force applied for a few minutes. It causes a sudden transfer of momentum and energy, and its effect is separately tested when the same amount of energy is transferred more gradually. Everyday engineering structures are subjected to it and may develop cracks that, over time, propagate to a point where catastrophic failure would result.

Manufacturers of various industries test the samples produced from their industries to test the quality and strength of materials to ensure the integrity of products.
